Trusting Yourself When Others Think Otherwise

Updated: Jan 4, 2025

At the close of work on Friday, I sat at the bus stop waiting for the bus. And as I sat there, a bus came to the bus stop but I knew from the description on the bus that it wasn't going my way. So I continued sitting. However, there were two people who made me feel awkward sitting there.

I and these two fellows use the same bus when we are coming and going. The first one entered the bus, but was told by the driver that he wasn't going his way, so he alighted and walked away, as if to get the bus from somewhere other than our usual bus stop. The second fellow came after the first had gone, showed his ticket and sat comfortably in the bus.

I was now the only one sitting at the bus stop. At this point, I asked myself if sitting down at the bus stop was the right thing on a Friday evening. Could it be that the bus I was waiting for didn't show up on Fridays or was there something I needed to know?

By the bus timetable on the notice board, the bus I was waiting for ran Mon-Fri.. and I was within time. So, I encouraged myself in sitting alone. Then another lady joined me. And in no time, the bus we were waiting for came.

Guess what?

As we drove down the road, lo and behold, that first fellow who had left was running down and flagging after our bus. Imagine if I had followed him to where he was going, since I felt awkward waiting for the bus alone?

This brings me to the point. We need to trust ourselves. We need to develop confidence in the paths we choose especially when we are sure of what we are doing. It might be an unfamiliar road that not everybody takes, but if you know deep down in your heart, that you're meant to be walking on that road, then do so confidently. Don't follow the crowd at the expense of your peace of mind.
